Future engineering professionals got a first look at ECST’s learning environment, programmes, and hands-on approach during its recent Open Day last 23rd May 2026, where learning met real-world application

The recent ECST Open Day 2026 welcomed prospective students, families, and visitors for an opportunity to explore the learning environment, academic offerings, and hands-on approach to engineering and technology education of the Engineering College of Science and Technology (ECST).

The event created a space for attendees to engage directly with staff, facilitators, and current students while gaining a better understanding of what studying at ECST could look like.

Inside the Open Day Experience

Held on 23rd May 2026 at the ECST campus in South Africa (9AM-12PM SAST), visitors were introduced to ECST’s programmes, facilities, and student support initiatives through guided discussions, presentations, and interactive activities. The sessions were led by ECST’s Head of College, Liza Rootman, who provided an overview of the college, including its academic offering, delivery approach, and fee structure, while also sharing insights into what makes ECST’s learning experience both flexible and future-focused. ECST Lecturer Samkelo Nene also contributed to the event by leading an interactive demonstration that offered visitors a practical glimpse into the hands-on learning and real-world application that ECST students can expect.

ECST Open Day Connects Future Students to Engineering Pathways

The Open Day highlighted the importance of giving students early exposure to academic pathways and industry-relevant learning experiences, especially now when engineering, technology, and innovation-driven careers continue to grow globally. It also highlighted ECST’s focus on accessible and applied education that prepares students for the future.

Connecting Students to their Future

As ECST’s Head of College, Liza also shared that the fundamental purpose of the Open Day is to showcase ECST’s differentiation from other traditional colleges, as it offers both theory and hands-on learning set to produce job-ready graduates.

“Our guests were taken through a tour of our modern facilities, showcasing the lecture rooms, resource centre, student entertainment areas and laboratories. Fundamentally, practical demonstrations in the laboratories were presented by the academic staff, exhibiting electromagnetic induction in power generation, precision measurements, and 3D printing. Other equipment also presented included lathe machines, drill presses, and force testers. After the tour, guests were invited into consultation rooms led by the Learning Support Officers in order to answer any question needed to start their engineering careers. We welcome matriculants and TVET graduates to our exciting future Open Day events.”
